Dredger arrives to start Dhidhdhoo reclamation

Must read

A dredger has arrived in Dhidhdhoo to begin long-planned land reclamation works aimed at expanding the island’s usable land area and strengthening its development prospects. The project is expected to support housing, public infrastructure and economic activities while improving the island’s resilience to coastal erosion and climate impacts.
Authorities said preparatory works will commence immediately, including site surveys, demarcation of reclamation zones and the installation of safety measures. Dredging and reclamation activities will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to daily life, fishing activities and marine traffic around the island.
Once completed, the reclaimed land is expected to be allocated for residential plots, community facilities and future development projects in line with local planning needs. Officials noted that the project forms part of broader efforts to address land shortages in island communities and to improve living standards.
Environmental safeguards will be implemented throughout the project, with continuous monitoring to reduce potential impacts on the surrounding marine ecosystem. Residents have been advised to follow safety instructions issued by local authorities during the reclamation period.
